The New Castle Airport, an icon in the town, was "birthed" in the mid 1930's, by Finley Wilson. Fin graduated from New Castle High in '24, then attended Slippery Rock State Teachers College. But flying was more intriguing than teaching, so he pointed himself in aviation's direction: a job at Franklin Aircraft, flying lessons, being an airport operator in Florida, a lost job in CA at an airline. Going back to New Castle, he leased farm land, built a 60x200 hangar and  opened the New Castle Flying School. As WWII approached and with the U.S. in dire need for massive pilot power, FDR and Congress commissioned the Civilian Pilot Training Program to teach young cadets how to fly: using local college classrooms like Westminister, Slippery Rock, and Grove City for ground instruction, and local airports (Fin's New Castle and Grove City) for the flying lessons. The government threw huge amounts of money into this program (and Fin's coffers), then allowed GI's to take flying lessons with their war benefits. By the 1950's that money had dried up and Wilson  worked a deal and sold the airport to the city of New Castle. Haski Aviation now leases the property from the City. This story, and many more, with many local people referenced, are told in "They Flew Proud" which won the 2007 Combs Gates Award given by the National Aviation Hall of Fame for its importance to aviation history. Several of the pilots who knew and flew under Fin Wilson will be at the Aug.28th picnic fly-in at New Castle Airport (noon to 4:30) to reminisce and sign the book for you.
