Why Choose the United States?
When choosing a flight school, the prospective students should consider several factors when deciding where they will receive the best training. The United States offers several advantages to flying anywhere else in the world. Credibility, cost, and weather are three factors that prospective students should weight heavily when making their decision.
The United States is home to 5 of 7 of the world’s largest airline companies and has the largest military and air force in the world. Pilots in the commercial industry as well as the defense sector make-up some of the most well respected and expertly trained pilots in the world.
Our country’s diverse weather allows our students the ability to train and become experts at flying in the best and worst conditions. In order to be a successful and prepared pilot, a student must train in all conditions. The United States experiences sun, clear skies, cloudy skies and ice. At the end of training, our students are able to fly through all ranges of weather calmly and safely.
The United States has by far the largest aviation industry in the world. When you think about the number of successful global corporations based in the US (Corporate Jet Departments), the largest military and air force in the world - the USAF & US Navy, the largest economy in the world - including 5 of the 7 largest airlines in the world, and the recent Regional Jet explosion in the states, you can get an idea for how truly huge this market is.
FAA Pilot Licenses are respected and validated around the world as ICAO Pilot Licenses. Most US Pilots stay within their own massive US Pilot Market, but their Training and Licenses are so highly respected throughout the world, that many US Pilots have ventured away to fly abroad for companies including pilots flying for airlines such as Korean Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airlines Cargo, and more. As mentioned above - there are many schools now in the US that provide JAA Flight Training and JAA European Pilot Licenses.
The US has excellent training schools and facilities. Flying in Canada is cold. There is rain, snow, poor visibility, clouds covering the skies, and possibilities for icing conditions. Flying in England is expensive. The fees and flight training expenses can almost double the cost of training in the United States. Many UK Based Pilot Training Schools have set up schools in the USA for Europeans to be able to acquire the JAA Pilot Licenses while training in the USA.
Training in the US is extremely cost effective when compared with training in Europe and Asia - in fact it is estimated to be between 30-35% less. This reduced cost in building flight hours and training can be a real advantage to Pilots from European & Asian countries. When estimating costs for Training in the US, remember that 1 Euro is about equal to 1 US$. For this reason many schools in the US have set up Foreign License Training Programs and pilots from Europe come to the USA to do their pilot training to save costs. Also many Asian airlines have set up Ab-Initio Training Programs for their new cadet pilots to train them from day 1 of flying right through to their first Airliner Simulator Training Flight - this saves these airlines millions of dollars each year due to the relatively low cost of training in the USA.

Akron Fulton Airport is located at the heart of Ohio. Cleveland Hopkins is only a 20 minute flight, and Pittsburg International Airport is only a 30 minute flight. Ohio has an airport in each one of its counties. Therefore during your flight training, you will have the opportunity to fly to several different types of airports and gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become a superior pilot.
Why Ohio?
Ohio is known as the “heart of it all”. This is because Ohio is shaped like a heart. However, Ohio does have several attractions and types of entertainment that make it not only a great place for you to train, but a great place to relax and sight see on the weekends!
Unlike Florida, Ohio offers four different seasons and gives you a variety of flight training. You will learn about preheating the aircraft in the winter and how to detect ice and why icing is a hazard to flying. You will experience first hand the effects of a high density altitude in the summer. You will be able to log several hours of actual instrument time – a GREAT thing to put in your log book and on your resume!
Between the end of March and the beginning of November, we generally benefit from excellent flying weather. Strong winds, high moisture and tropical storms are rare phenomena in our area. At most, you will see some mist in the early morning and a few thunderstorms in the early afternoon as anywhere else in the world.
When learning to fly at American Winds, we offer you a professional, yet relaxed and fun environment.
Your training will typically be 1-on-1 with your instructor, not in a crowded classroom. Personalized attention allows us to deliver your training at a pace suited to you. Fly as often as you’d like! There is no big fee you must pay up front. You pay for the time you spend on the ground with your instructor and in the air learning to fly. Flight lessons typically last 1.5-2 hours so you can pay as go!
